Mary Burns

Life can affect us emotionally, physically, socially, and within our relationships. That's why I believe therapy should consider the whole person—not just a diagnosis or the challenge that brought you through the door.

I work with clients across the lifespan and provide a safe, affirming space to explore thoughts, emotions, behaviors, relationships, and life experiences. My approach is client-centered and grounded in a biopsychosocial perspective. Simply put, I want to understand you as a whole person. Together, we'll consider the emotional, physical, relational, social, and environmental factors that may be affecting your well-being.

Because every client is different, I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. I draw from a variety of evidence-based and evidence-informed approaches to create an experience tailored to your needs, personality, strengths, and goals. My work may incorporate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, attachment-based family interventions, Positive Psychology, and nature-based interventions.

My therapy style is:

• Warm and welcoming

• Client-centered

• Collaborative

• Whole-person focused

• Affirming

• Strengths-based

• Practical

• Mindfulness-informed

• Flexible and individualized

• Evidence-informed

• Mind-body oriented

I also believe that healing doesn't always happen through talking alone. When appropriate, I incorporate mindfulness and mind-body strategies such as meditation, progressive relaxation, journaling, and Emotional Freedom Technique (tapping) to help clients develop practical ways of managing stress and emotions in everyday life.

Areas of Focus

I support clients experiencing concerns such as:

• Anxiety

• Depression

• Grief and loss

• Stress

• Life transitions

• Adjustment difficulties

• Feeling overwhelmed

• Feeling stuck

• Difficult thoughts and emotions

• Coping difficulties

• Self-esteem concerns

• Personal growth

• Decision-making difficulties

• High-stress life circumstances

Depending on your interests and needs, sessions may incorporate techniques such as:

• Mindfulness meditation

• Progressive relaxation

• Journaling

• Emotional Freedom Technique/tapping

• Somatic awareness

• Stress-management techniques

Mental health doesn't exist separately from the rest of your life. Our emotional well-being can be influenced by physical health, relationships, family, work, environment, community, stress, loss, identity, and life experiences. My biopsychosocial approach considers these different areas rather than reducing your experience to a single symptom or diagnosis. Together, we'll look at the bigger picture and identify changes and resources that can support your overall well-being.
